ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum: A variety of interactive science exhibits are available at the museum, located at 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. The interactive museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday. Many exhibits will be modified to reduce touch surfaces — fewer hands-on activities — and increase physical distancing. On Saturday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 7 p.m. a special event will be held,the “All of Us Experience,” featuring exhibits and activities, virtual presentations and panel discussions, refreshments and more, all focused on helping individuals understand their DNA and genome, ancestry and precision medicine. ‘Windows in Time’ local history lecture: As part of the free “Windows in Time” lecture series, Jerry Hellinga, retired forester and treasurer and chief mechanical officer of the Southern Oregon Railway Historical Society, will present “The Railroad to Butte Falls: From Tourism to Logging” at noon Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave., and via Zoom. Incorporated in 1905, the little railroad running east into the mountains from the growing town of Medford was initially planned to serve the Crater Lake tourist trade. In 1910, plans were made to connect it to Klamath Falls, but the railroad never got beyond Butte Falls. At its start, there were great expectations for the railroad, which, through failures and reincarnations, eventually became a workhorse of the timber industry in Southern Oregon. Hellinga will relate the colorful and little-known story of the railroad to Butte Falls. Registration is required for attending both in-person and online.
