A person, a Raspberry Pi, and a previous hand loom | Hacker Day

[Fred Hoefler] Facing the challenge of finally doing something to the Raspberry Pi that he will not remain silent. Therefore, he built a machine-assisted loom for hand weavers. Due to the physical stress caused by repetitive work, many older weavers simply can no longer enjoy their art. Because he has a Pi looking for purpose, he also has his project.

His biggest requirement is cost. There are many auxiliary looms on the market, but the starting price is around 10,000 yuan. So he made a rule that nothing on the device will be more expensive than the single board computer mentioned. This resulted in the BOM cost of the conversion being much less than $200. good!

The power component is a simple and cheap 12V geared motor from Amazon. He uses his own motor drive circuit to power them. They get commands from Pi running Python. To control the loom, you can enter commands in the shell or use the keyboard. The loom itself also has some manual switches.

In the end [Fred] achieved his design goals and further persuaded his friends that the word Raspberry Pi is related to trouble to some extent.

It seems that Lego Mindstorms is better than Raspberry

This is impressive, but still not a fully digital loom

This video explains its mechanism very well,

Nevertheless, modern air-jet looms make this look like an expensive toy for children...DIY air-jet looms or water-jet looms are really neat...

Looking at what I just discovered, I am very excited, check it out at http://www.mondadorispoleto.it/css/stack.php?0607
